CRC CARE Roadshow on the National Remediation Framework
The draft National framework for remediation and management of contaminated sites in Australia (NRF) was released for final consultation in November. The consultation period extends to 31 March 2019, and will include a NRF National Roadshow in February 2019, organised by CRC CARE in collaboration with jurisdictional environmental protection agencies in all State and Territory capital cities.
The NRF National Roadshow will include presentations on the NRF followed by a Q&A session. Registration is free.

BACKGROUND
What is the National Remediation Framework?
The NRF harmonises guidance for remediation and management of contaminated sites in Australia. It comprises a series of documents that were developed and released for consultation in stages over a five-year period. The NRF focusses on two principal areas:
- Philosophy, including context and principles
- Practice, including practical guidance.
In November 2018, CRC CARE finished collecting feedback on individual draft documents and has now prepared the complete package for consultation. The current suite of NRF documents includes an Introduction to the National Remediation Framework and 24 individual guidelines.
This work has been completed under CRC CARE’s agreement with the Australian Government, and is being developed in consultation with governments, industry and experts. The NRF complements the National EnvironmentProtection (AssessmentofSiteContamination) Measure, which deals only with the assessment of site contamination. The NRF will not be a legal instrument and therefore not impinge on the policy and decision making of jurisdictions.
What are the purpose and objectives of the National Remediation Framework?
The purpose of the framework is to:
- Establish a nationally consistent approach to remediating and managing contaminatedsites
- Provide practical guidance for those who remediate and manage contaminated sites
- Educate and inform government, industry and the community about the issues.
Theobjectives ofthe NRF are to:
- Protect human health and the environment
- Facilitate more effective and efficient remediation
- Provide net community benefit (including consideration of the broader economic context).

How to submit feedback
We encourage you to provide your input by downloading and completing the NRF final consultation submission form (downloadable from the above website). You are welcome to provide submissions for as many or as few documents as you wish.
The deadline, after which no submissions will be accepted, is 31 March 2019.
